Vivid’s Sasha Grey staring film, “Throat” has some decent things going for it.

What’s great about Throat is that they actually do succeed in making Sasha Grey’s character likable, primarily from a scene in which a more experienced sex performer teaches her how to deep throat a dildo. The storyline is broken up which adds to a disorienting effect that makes all of the sex scenes easier to swallow (no pun intended).

Where this film fails is its amateurish storytelling, most of which is expected of porn films. The story gives the impression that deep throating is some kind of miraculous talent like Heifetz’ violin, while not demonstrating that the character really had something special within the context of the “society” that she lived in. The sex scenes become distracting to the story line instead of progressing the storyline (very typical). Minor subplots with the detectives who are investigating the murder goes nowhere that ties in with their overall mission to discover how Sasha Grey’s character died. In fact its hard to know who the main character is at times. It’s a porn feature. What did I expect?

Its funny to hear people ridicule porn features for how they take too long to get to the sex and then watch the porn industry continue to make them. Some people obviously want to see them, but why bother making them if they’re not going to be up to par with traditional moviemaking when it comes to the storytelling. This is the biggest reason to ridicule porn features: they don’t do storytelling well at all, even though they do some spectacular sex. They should just stick to what they know best.

Ironically, fixing throat wouldn’t be so hard. The homocide detective could tie in her sexual exploit pretty easily if she were to go “undercover” into that underground world of sex shows and making her the main character whose storyline becomes parallel to the victim’s. As she starts to become wrapped up in this seductive world, she’ll not only indulge in every sexual possibility, she’ll also learn the truth, but only when its too late. The whole tale could be about the impact that the victim, Sasha Grey, has on this detective’s way of life. The detective changes from being a socially reserved, disinterested person to a full-blown sex bomb. This way of telling the story could even be free of flashbacks and really engage the audience.

The only thing that I could never like is the obvious sex negative message of this movie. There are women who have great experiences in the sex industry, but their stories, in our shame-based society is elusive.
